Things To Take When You Go Camping, Oil on Upcycled Canvas, 9"x12"

The original image that inspired this work came from a 1970’s book on North American Outdoor Tourist Destinations, from a time when climate change was an issue on the backburner that could be postponed to a later date. Camping as a subject in painting is one of endless fascination; camping is yet another byproduct of our species’ tendency to commodify natural spaces that aren’t simply for visiting, and in this sense, Nature becomes an extension of our socially fabricated world.

The work was created using once loved oil paints on up-cycled canvas. Up-cycled canvas has its own distinct flavor to it; you have lean in to the richness of layered history (of stories beneath stories) canvas; many moments were had; painting over them is a means of honoring what’s around the corner and accepting the moments that are now distant and just memory.
